Testimonials

I didn’t realize I had so much to work with already. In the new combinations you showed me, I love the clothes I already had as much as the new pieces we bought!

~ Lynne Abbott

I was truly amazed at how many outfits I already had in my own closet! You provided me with a clear understanding of what looked good on me, how to create more combinations and what would be smart additions to my wardrobe. Andrea, without you I am sure I would have spent more money on more clothes, when most of what I needed was already in my closet.

Case Study

Abstract

A wardrobe, like other business tools, needs to be updated strategically as time progresses in order for it to be truly useful. It is my experience that most business people have researched style techniques, but don’t really understand how to use them and what benefits, when properly done, they can provide to a career or business’s success.

This article illustrates how a wardrobe assessment can change someone’s life in positive unexpected ways. This transformation was enjoyable for this client, and she has integrated the new techniques and knowledge into her personal habits.

Challenge

Like most business professionals, when my client needed to dress for an important meeting, she went for a favorite. Over time, these favorites became less cohesive as they became outdated at differing rates. You know the look: few-to-several separates, cobbled together because they share the same shade of blue. My client knew she did not look her best.

People who seek wardrobe consultations often have had weight fluctuations. Not this client, who had a whole closet of clothes that fit. And not too many of them, either. Her style preference was for easy-to-care-for pieces that could be matched with other separates. When we went through her closet, I noticed an affinity for a certain color palette, and favorite styles, fabrics, and designers. I would use this information later, to help choose the store we would visit for her in-store personal shopping experience.

Action taken

While in her closet, I saw that her problems included some outdated jackets and suits, tops that were too “memorable” or difficult to match and several missing wardrobe basics which are essential for worry-free dressing.

The next step was a visit to a retailer to fill in her wardrobe gaps and create new outfits with what she still had in her closet. I arrived early, and pulled several items that I knew fit her body type, and coordinated with those nice, but hard-to-match items at home. In less than two hours, we had filled in all of the blanks, including shoes!

Fortunately, I was able to get her a Friends & Family discount, enabling her to save 30% off the entire purchase. She was thrilled!

Because she likes to be prepared, I later sent her a list of items she could look for when shopping. These new colors and styles will expand her options even further.

Results

Since her wardrobe make-over, my client has reported several benefits, some expected and some pleasant surprises.

The expected benefits of increased confidence that comes from always looking good; as well as the efficiency of pulling together a variety of looks, were both realized. People compliment her more often. Her new easy-to-wear clothes are also easy to clean: her dry cleaning bill has decreased since that successful shopping day.

Her unexpected benefits have been a reduced desire to shop, and a more efficient time shopping when she does go. The time savings takes the form of not looking at and trying on certain racks in the store that contain problematic items for her. She also reports the benefits of taking that almost-perfect item to the tailor, and getting back perfection. Her smarter shopping techniques save her even more money.

She said she looks forward to a revamp of her summer wardrobe too, and I look forward to helping her look great all year.
